Mini has revealed the new John Cooper Works versions of the Cooper and Aceman EVs at the 2024 Paris motor show.
-
The hot JCW duo represent the first products from Mini's performance division to be powered by electricity, both are powered by a 254bhp and 251lb ft motor mounted on the front axle. This represents an increase of 39bhp over the current combustion-powered models.
-
As a result, the Cooper can sprint from 0-62mph in 5.9sec, while the Aceman takes just half a second longer. Both models have the same top speed of 124mph.
-
Both cars use the same 49.2kWh (usable) battery as the standard cars. Capable of charging at up to 95kW, it is good for a range of 251 miles in the Cooper and 243 in the Aceman.
-
Head of Mini Stefan Richmann said: "With the new all-electric Mini John Cooper Works models, we are bringing the legendary performance and driving dynamics of Mini into a completely new era. We are combining the tradition and character of the Mini brand with the latest technology to create a unique driving experience that will thrill our customers”.
-
Both cars offer an electric boost function, which provides an extra 27bhp for short bursts; likely useful for overtaking. To activate this, the driver has to pull a paddle behind the steering wheel and activate go-kart mode.
-
Underneath, the cars get lowered and stiffened suspension for more agile handling, with bespoke tyres designed for high-speed cornering. JCW models also get their own beefed-up braking system, designed for "demanding situations", according to Mini.
-
Mini is set to begin deliveries of both cars from April next year. They will initially be built alongside the standard cars in China but they are expected to begin rolling down the line at Mini’s Oxford plant from 2026.
-
The hot JCW cars are marked out from their regular counterparts by an aggressive-looking bodykit including a chunky rear wing, rear diffuser, aero blades and contrasting black and red trim.
-
There are also new alloy designs - 18in and 19in in diameter - and the JCW chequered-flag-style motif features on the bootlid, the front grille and the sills. The sporting theme continues inside, with a new black and red theme for the knitted dashboard, front seats and ambient lighting.
-
Mini says the two new hot hatchbacks “follow a rich heritage of previous John Cooper Works models and maintain the characteristics worthy of the JCW name”.
