Sure, like many old-school diehards, we had reservations when it was first announced that Ford’s first mainstream EV would carry the Mustang name, but we’ve come round to it. We love the Pony badging and we love the fact that Ford has gone all-in on giving it a unique look..

2. We LOATHE the Ford Mustang Mach-E because…
Someone tried just a bit too hard to give the Mach-E a character to live up to the name, compromising the suspension settings on the early cars to give them the ability to skid and slide and make a keen driver feel good, at the expense of everyday ride comfort. Meanwhile, he go-faster Mach-E GT has different problems; it’s fearsomely fast in a straight line, but show it a bump and you’ll be off to the dentist for new fillings in a flash.

What’s the first thing you notice when they get into a Mach-E? We’d bet our house that it will be the giant 15.5-inch infotainment screen, mounted in portrait format on the dash and a metaphorical way of saying to Tesla, ‘Anything you can do, we can do bigger’. Older drivers may also welcome the fact it means everything on the touchscreen is usefully super-sized.

Of course, before they can comment on the giant infotainment screen, first they must get into the Mach-E: a task made infinitely harder by the decision to do away with door handles and replace them with buttons. Once you know, it’s mildly amusing watching would-be passengers trying to work it out - but face the wrath of one of them who’s been left in the rain once and you’ll soon wonder what the point is.

Range is everything in an electric car, and the Mach-E has the potential to go further than most: the extended range model is rated as delivering up to 372 miles on some global test cycles. There are electric cars that are rated as going further, but not many; the Mach-E has even earned a few places in the Guiness Book of Records for its cross-country skills.

6. We LOATHE the Ford Mustang Mach-E because…
We know it’s a Ford, and we know that this usually brings with it mainstream compromises on build quality of and fixtures and fittings - that’s why they have Lincoln, Toyota Lexus, Hyundai Genesis and so on. But the Mach-E is not a low-cost, everyday Ford - starting prices make it a seriously high-end vehicle, and while we know a lot of that cost is in the battery, we think they should have tried harder to make the inside sing.

7. We LOVE the Ford Mustang Mach-E because…
The frunk - or front trunk - is so simple, yet so clever, but many electric car makers don’t leave the space open for extra storage capacity. So while Ford didn’t invent the idea, we applaud it for not only opening up the 6.7 cubic inches of space under the bonnet, but fitting a drain pump so you can use it to store your ice and cool your beer on a day out. Make ours a Budweiser, barman!

8. We LOATHE the Ford Mustang Mach-E because…
Back to the go-faster Mach-E GT, which gets its own entry because it is - if you can forgive our frankness - so evidently not a capable performance car in any way beyond being fearsomely fast in a straight line. So while a 4.3sec 0-62mph is enticing and a 16.1sec quarter mile time intoxicating, we’re seriously unimpressed by how quickly the brakes fade in hard track driving, and how determinedly rigid the ride is at all times.

9. We LOVE the Ford Mustang Mach-E because…
The Mach-E has spawned the sort of one-off projects that make a car special, none more so than the aptly named Mach-E 1400 drift car that was driven by Vaughn Gitten Jr and which, aptly, had 1400hp from its seven motors, plus the benefit of 1000kg of downforce at 160mph thanks to those oh-so eye-catching wings. Cue mayhem… and plenty of smiles.

10. We LOATHE the Ford Mustang Mach-E because…
At the end of the day, it’s still a Ford, and despite its price tag (reduced in some markets this year, but still toppy) it’s not really as desirable as the likes of the Tesla Model Y. We get that some people would sooner saw their own arm off than put more money into Elon’s pocket (or maybe into keeping Twitter alive), and we applaud the fact Ford has gone with its own priorities rather than create a jelly mould EV SUV… but is it really a world-beater? We think not.
