Car buying bible What Car? has revealed the electric cars in contention to win at its highly anticipated Car of the Year Awards next month.
Defending champions are the Volkswagen ID3 (Best Small Electric Car) and the Tesla Model 3 (Best Large Electric Car). A new category has been launched this year to name the Best Electric SUV.
Challengers launched in 2021 include the Audi Q4 e-tron, BMW i4, BMW iX, Cupra Born, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Tesla Model Y.
The long list is made up of new or updated models launched in the past 12 months, plus defending champions from the 2021 event.
To be eligible for a What Car? Award, a car has to have been tested back-to-back with its rivals, both on UK roads and at What Car?’s dedicated test track. The Awards are held in association with MotorEasy.
Talking about the decision to add an additional electric car category, What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “Our Car of the Year Awards are the culmination of 12 months of testing, and set the highest standard for the automotive industry.
“Given the booming sales of electric cars, we felt it was only right to recognise a wider variety of electric vehicles for the increasing number of motorists who are looking to go green."
The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel on January 20.
