Mercedes will enter the electric campervan market thanks to a new motorhome conversion for its EQV electric van – providing an early rival for the forthcoming Volkswagen ID Buzz California camper.
Created by Swiss company Sortimo Walter Rüegg, the third-party EQV eCamper conversion is offered with a range of options including a pop-up roof and built-in kitchen unit with a sink, gas cooker and fridge.
The various camping features of the van have been designed to be lightweight to limit the impact on the electric van’s range.
Sortimo can also install two solar panels with a total output of around 400 watts and charge both the starter battery and the additional battery for camping.
In typical motorhome fashion you can opt for swivelling driver and front passenger seats with other options including USB ports, privacy glass and rear interior lighting.
"The motorhome market is of strategic importance for Mercedes‑Benz Vans. We want to continue to grow here and play a pioneering role in terms of innovation and sustainability,” said Klaus Rehkugler, head of sales and marketing Mercedes‑Benz Vans.
Two EQV models are available, the 250 and the 300. The 250 model has a 60kWh battery and a range of up to 146 miles, with the 300 version powered by a 90kWh battery and a bigger range of 225 miles. Using a rapid charge the EQV 300 can be charged from 10% to 80% in 45 minutes.
The EQV starts from £71,645 but Mercedes has not yet revealed the price of the eCamper.
