MG has launched a new entry level version of the revamped ZS EV SUV featuring a bigger battery that boosts the range to 198 miles.

The new ZS EV Standard Range swaps the 44.5kWh battery previously used for a later 51.1kWh unit, which means the machine offered 35 miles more range on the official WLTP scale.

The addition of the larger battery has led to an increase from the £26,095 cost of the previous model, although the machine still qualifies for the UK government’s £1500 Plug-In Car Grant (PiCG). After that is decided, the MS ZS EV Standard Range is priced from £27,495.

The previous version of the ZS EV was a sales hit for MG, and one of the 10 best-selling EVs in the UK last year.

The machine can be charged at speeds of up to 100kW on a rapid charger, allowing for a 10% to 80% charge in 36 minutes.

The ZS, which competed with the likes of the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona, is also offered in a Long Range version that features a 72kWh battery for a 273-mile range. That model is priced from £28,495 after the PiCG.

Interestingly, while both versions of the ZS use the same electric motor, the different operating voltage of the Standard Range model means it has a higher power output of 130kw (174bhp), compared to 115kw (154bhp) for the Long Range. That output is also up from 105kW (141bhp) for the previous generation Standard Range.

Both versions of the car are offered in three trim levels: SE, Trophy and Trophy connect. All models feature a 10.1in touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster and wireless phone charging. Entry-level SE trim models feature air conditioning, vehicle-to-load charging and a 360-degree parking camera. Trophy models add a panoramic ‘sky roof’ and heated seats, while top-spec Trophy Connect models feature MG’s connected iSmart services.
