Case aiming to scoop up share of electric excavator market

1 Mar 2022

Leading construction vehicle manufacturer Case has unveiled a new CX15 EV electric mini-excavator, which it will sell in Europe as a rival to JCB's 19C-1E.

The long-running American-based firm says the 1.3t mini excavator will be powered by a 16kW electric motor, with a 21.5kWh lithium ion battery.

Case claims its new mini digger will have rapid charging capabilities allowing the CX15 to be fully charged in around 90 minutes. The firm also says its electric excavator has enough power to work through a full eight-hour work day.

The CX15 EV will feature retractable tracks reducing the width of the machine down to 790mm enabling the mini digger to negotiate doors and confined spaces.

A load-sensing hydraulic system will deliver smooth and powerful performance that Case says will “allow operators to dial the machine into each task”.

Egidio Galano, Case Europe's construction equipment boss, said: “This machine is the next step in our electrification journey — and we are committed to bringing the industry a complementary portfolio of diesel and electric equipment to meet the needs of the broadest range of applications and operations.”

The new machine enters a fast-growing market for electric industrial vehicles. JCB launched its first electric excavator in 2019 with a choice of 15kWh or 20kWh hour batteries. It can be charged in a slightly slower time of around two and a half hours when using a rapid charging device and can deliver enough battery life for full working shift on a construction site.
