New Maserati Grecale Folgore will be brand's first electric SUV

17 Mar 2022

Maserati will launch an electric version of its new Grecale SUV – and has promised that the battery-powered version will retain a performance focus.

The new Porsche Macan rival has just been unveiled, and will go on sale with a range of petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains. It's Maserati's second SUV after the larger levante, and shares a platform with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

But the combustion-engined versions the firm has launched are just the start: an electric version, branded the Gracele Folgore, is coming. It's part of a big electrification push by parent firm Stellantis in which Maserati will only launch new full electric cars from 2025 onwards.

The Italian firm says the new Grecale Folgore will launch a year after the hybrid variant of the new SUV.

Maserati revealed that it will be equipped with a 105kWh battery featuring 400V technology, while also delivering 590 lb ft of torque, which the manufacturer says should ‘guarantee performance typical of the brand’. It has yet to give a power output for the Folgore.

Inside the EV is likely to be identical to the combustion engined version of the Grecale, while for the exterior expect some of the usual EV styling cues, such as a redesigned front grille.

It will also be offered in an exclusive Rame Folgore colour. That's apparently based on extensive research into how the paint can interact with light, according to Maserati, which claims the colour was inspired by the Guggenheim museum and uses special pigments.

Maserati says its first pure EV will feature new materials such as Econyl, a new element which will give its Folgore a ‘unique aesthetic and  recycled nylon using nets recovered from the sea.

The Folgore is due to land in 2023 with Maserati expected to launch an electrified version of its Gran Turismo sports coupe.
