Swedish electric car manufacturer Polestar is to partner with Hertz to sell the car rental firm up to 65,000 electric cars over the next five years.
The move is the latest step by the rental giant to substantially increase its electric car fleet. Hertz recently agreed a deal to purchase up to 100,000 cars from Tesla in a bid to drive up EV adoption.
Hertz says the new Polestar rental cars will be available from Spring of this year in Europe, Australia and the US.
The rental firm added that the partnership with Polestar would help to build on the company’s ongoing commitment to electrification, shared mobility and a digital-first customer experience.
In addition to making the fleet available to its business and leisure customers, Hertz is extending EVs to rideshare drivers as a way to further accelerate electrification, while also pledging to offer the largest EV rental fleet in North America.
“We are excited to partner with Polestar and look forward to introducing their premium EV products into our retail and rideshare fleets,” said Hertz boss Stephen Scherr.
“By working with EV industry leaders like Polestar, we can help accelerate the adoption of electrification while providing renters, corporate customers and rideshare partners a premium EV product, exceptional experience and lower carbon footprint.”
Polestar will initially supply Hertz with its 2, the firm’s first production model. The Polestar 2 offers a range of 294-336 miles of range depending on the model variant and can be charged at speeds of up to 150kW.
The Swedish car maker Polestar reported that it nearly tripled volumes in 2021 and expects volumes to reach 290,000 vehicles per year by the end of 2025.
