Kia launches Niro Plus as first purpose-built vehicle in Korea

27 Apr 2022

Korean car brand Kia has unveiled the Niro Plus, a new electric taxi model which brings the brand into the purpose-built vehicle (PBV) market.

The Niro Plus, which is based on the outgoing first generation Kia Niro EV (previously known as the e-Niro), will be available as a zero-emission taxi in Korea.

Earlier this year Kia committed itself to becoming “the number one global leader” in the purpose-built vehicle market by 2030, with plans to introduce a bespoke PBV platform in 2025.

To increase the size of the cabin, the Niro Plus is 10mm longer and 80mm taller than the standard car, with the interior featuring thinner seats and door trims.

Passenger safety and convenience features including door reflectors and assist handles are also available in both the taxi and general models.

The Niro Plus gets an all-in-one display for the taxi model to improve convenience and safety for the driver, removing the need for multiple devices and screens.

Kia says that as a sustainable vehicle provider, it is “exploring diverse ways to help people and businesses move beyond traditional automotive” adding that they expect PBV’s to become an important part of the future.

“Kia is transforming its business strategy to focus on popularising EVs, and introducing new mobility products that are tailored to the needs of users in markets around the world," said Sangdae Kim, head of Kia eLCV business division.

"The Niro Plus is our first step into the world of PBVs, a market that holds great potential for future development.”

Kia has not yet revealed plans to bring the Niro Plus to the UK, but says that it is looking at other markets.

The firm will offer a non-taxi variant of the Niro Plus which will be available in some overseas markets, while a plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid will also be added to the line-up.
