Polestar unleashes the beast with new limited-run sports EV

Polestar has revealed a high-performance range-topping version of its 2 electric saloon – and it’s a bit of a beast. Or, to be more precise, it’s based on a beast.

At the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed the firm revealed an Experimential Polestar 2 nicknamed ‘the beast’, which showcased how a full performance car from the brand could look. The positive reaction to that machine has prompted Polestar to turn it into a production version: the Polestar 2 BST edition 270.

It’s effectively a return to Polestar’s routes: before it was turned into a standalone electric brand, Polestar started out tuning high-performance Volvo models that were badged as Polestar Engineered.

The BST edition 270 retains the regular 2’s pair of electric motors, but they have been tuned to raise the total system output to 350kW of power and 502lb ft of torque. That’s in line with a recent performance boost to the standard model that was offered as an over-the-air software upgrade.

The machine has a raft of other modifications in order to offer “a superior dynamic performance”. The chassis ride height has been lowered by 25mm, and specially developed Ohlins two-way adjustable dampers have been fitted, along with a front strut bar, stiffer springs, new matte black 21-inch alloy wheels and custom Pirelli P Zero tyres.

It retains a 78kWh battery, giving a range of around 292 miles.

The machine will be offered in a choice of two exterior colours titles Thunder and Snow (grey and white, basically), with a Charcoal WeaveTech interior. There’s also full painted bumpers and side skirts.

The machine will be a limited-run model, with just 270 produced – yes, the clue was in the car’s name. No pricing details have been revealed, but expect it to be around £60,000. Customers can register their interest on the Polestar website. Deliveries are due to begin late this year.
