Denso reveals new wireless EV charging technology

17 Jun 2022

Automotive technology supplier Denso says it will put an end to “charging chores” with its new charging technology, which it says will enable EV drivers to charge without needing to stop.

The Japanese firm has developed technology whereby wireless power transfer devices automatically charge EV batteries when stationary or on the move.

Denso is one of a number of firms working on wireless EV charging for moving cars. Stellantis is one of a number of partners involved in developing the Arena del Futuro, a 1050-metre oval test track that is being used to test wireless power transfer devices.

Denso says its new charging technology, which is still in development, will provide a number of advantages to EV motorists including making charging quicker and easier, improving overall vehicle range, and passing EV cost savings to customers.

The firm added that EV users are “familiar with the challenges related to finding charging stations” and that as electric cars are adopted by more drivers, this could become more of an issue in the future.

Denso’s Electrification Systems Engineers Keisuke Tani and Nobuhisa Yamaguchi said their involvement in the project led to them ‘thinking outside the box of gasoline vehicles’.

“As for how the technology will work, the principle is the same as that of wireless charging for smartphones today,” said Tani.

“The charging devices are embedded in the road, and they provide electricity to vehicles when they pass over or halt on the devices.

“The key point is to limit the charging points by coordinating infrastructure and mobility to minimize the energy consumption.”

Denso says that its concept works in a similar way to that of a self-charging hybrid and hopes that its dynamic wireless power transfer will integrate into our daily transport routine.

The proof of concept has already seen Denso begin social experimentation through demonstrative testing.

In 2025 the company is planning to start practical applications of the technology in compact mobility systems within its own global manufacturing plants.

Denso believes its new technology will work best with vehicles that serve distribution centres, plants and other facilities that operate non-stop throughout the day.
