Leading Formula 1 squad McLaren Racing has agreed a deal to use Nissan powertrains for its entry into the ABB Formula E World Championship.
The Woking-based squad will enter the all-electric single-seater category for the forthcoming 2022/23 season, when the radical new Gen3 cars will be introduced. It will take over the title-winning Mercedes-AMG EQ squad, but with the German firm quitting the category had yet to secure a powertrain deal.
McLaren has now agreed a technical collaboration with Nissan for a supply of powertrains. The Japanese car giant has been a mainstay in the category, and recently bought up the e.dams squad to create a full factory team.
Nissan chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta, said that the partnership “will be a powerful one, as the association will inspire collaboration and knowledge sharing.”
McLaren Racing boss Zak Brown added: “Nissan have proven their knowledge, craft and commitment over the last four seasons in Formula E, and heading into the Gen3 era, we have full confidence that the collaboration will bring both parties much success.”
Nissan has raced in Formula E since the 2018/19 season, having taken over the powertrain project from alliance partner Renault.
