Lunaz massively expands facility for 'upcycling' industrial vehicles

7 Jul 2022

British firm Lunaz Applied Technologies (LAT), which specialises in ‘upcycling’ and electrifying industrial and commercial vehicles such as bin lorries, has completed a huge expansion of its campus at Silverstone – giving it the capacity to work on 1100 vehicles per year.

The firm says that the expansion of its facility is to meet surging demand to convert diesel-powered machines to electric power. Lunaz has expanded its campus at the Silverstone Technology Park in Northamptonshire by 300%, adding 140,000sq ft of space to give it a total footprint of 200,000sq ft. Lunaz is also planning to add 300 jobs.

The new facility will house all the services Lunaz Applied Technologies offers as part of its conversion process. That includes a facility to inspect the vehicle, removing and ‘reclaiming’ the fluids within it, and stripping it to a bare chassis. The internal plastics are all repaired and recoated, before all the electrical lines and systems are replaced with recycled components.

Lunaz also fits a range of advanced monitors in place of the wing mirrors to aid visibility and safety, with a digital dashboard replacing the analogue instruments.

Then, perhaps most importantly, the combustion engined is removed, dismantled and sent for recycling, with a proprietary Lunaz electric powertrain fitted, including a modular battery system that can be customised for the route the vehicle operates on.

Lunaz claims that the new campus will also have a reduced environmental footprint, with a high thermal efficiency and heating powered by sustainably generated energy. Even the vehicle ramps have been fitted with a kinetic energy recovery system to make them as efficient as possible.

Lunaz Applied Technologies is one of three firms that is part of the Lunaz Group: the firm also operates Lunaz Designs, which electrifies classic cars, and Lunaz Powertrain, which develops its modular EV powertrain.
