Pop-up solar EV charging hub hits new milestone

25 Jul 2022

A pop-up mini solar car park has generated sufficient solar power to drive an average family EV in excess of 20,000 miles, after just eight weeks in service.

Data revealed today shows that since the 3ti hub's installation at Surrey Research Park in Guildford, the renewable charging solution has generated more than twice the average UK driver’s annual mileage.

“Solar is an abundant source of renewable energy – yield from our first Papilio3 unit at Surrey Research Park has already topped 4.86MWh, and all 12 charging points have been in regular use,” says Tim Evans, 3ti founder and CEO.

In June, the first Papilio3 unit generated 2.36MWh and, according to 3ti, is on track to exceed this milestone in July.

British tech firm 3ti unveiled a prototype version of its new pop-up charging solution last month, which has the capacity to turn 14 car parking spaces into 12 EV charge points.

The modular Papilio3 charging hub, which  is made out of a recycled shipping container, can operate at speeds of up to 22kWh and is designed to be used as a ‘destination charger” at places like shopping centres.

“Papilio3 will play a direct and prominent role in decarbonising the UK transport sector with scalable technology that is easily deployed as a workplace and destination charging solution,” Evans continued.

“It will also help to deliver on renewable energy targets and reduce the carbon intensity of EV charging, especially during peak hours where the grid relies on a carbon-rich safety net.”

3ti recently launched a crowdfunding campaign with the firm securing £500,000 worth of investment within the first hour of the funding page going live.
