Green fingers, green car? Osprey adds garden centre charging hubs

31 Aug 2022

Here’s some good news for green-fingered electric vehicle drivers: thanks to a new partnership between Osprey and British Garden Centres you’ll soon be able to plug in while you pick up some petunias and charge your car while you buy carnations.

Leaving aside our bad pun attempts, it’s a new partnership that will involve Osprey rolling out rapid charging hubs at 12 British Garden Centres locations around the UK. The first site will be in Caramarthen, Wales, where Osprey will open a bank of eight 150kW ultra-rapid chargers.

Those chargers can add 100 miles of range in 20-30 minutes, depending on how fast your car will charge. So you’d best not dawdle while choosing your daisies.

The Carmarthen site will be followed by 11 charging hubs, starting with Wimborne in Dorset, the fittingly-named Carr Gate in Yorkshire, Braintree in Essex and Harrow in London. They will be followed by Osterley, Wolseley, Albrighton, Newton Regis, Gilberdyke, Towneley and Brigg.

Osprey boss predicts charging challenges before rapid rollout

The sites will mix larger hubs with smaller installations, depending on the size of the garden centre and the availability of power.

British Garden Centres is the largest family-owned garden centre chain in the UK, and the EV hubs are part of a plan to renew its whole portfolio in the coming years. It currently runs 61 garden centres in the UK.
