New BMC Roadmachine 01 AMP X is slick electric performance road bike

Swiss bike firm BMC has added a new premium electric road bike to its range, the Roadmachine 01 AMP X, which features a new motor that is claimed to offer “revolutionary power”.

In a move away from the Mahle Smartbike System motors and batteries, the new bike will be equipped with the TQ-HPR50 system. It is hidden in the frame with the charge port above the bottom bracket at the bottom of the downtube. It uses harmonic pin-ring transmission and can provide up to 50 Nm of torque, which for an electric road bike should mean it’ll tackle the steeper hills that rear hub motors often struggle with.

While the US market models will offer assistance up to 28mph to meet the more lenient e-bike rules there, the firm will also offer a global model for other markets. In the UK, e-bikes can only offer electric assistance at speeds of up to 15.5mph.

The bike will come with a 360Wh battery and a 2in display fully integrated into the top tube that gives control of three assist levels. Further customisation can be made via the TQ app.

In terms of geometry, the frame offers a taller stack height, which allows for shorter chainstays and a taller handlebar for more agility. A custom BMC backlight is integrated into the rear of the frame for more visibility, which is great to see on a road bike, and not just for aerodynamics or ease of use, as it’s usually the reserve of urban bikes to include lights as standard.

The frame itself weighs just 3,900 grams and aids itself in multi-terrain riding with wide forks that can take up to 38mm wide tyres. The 01 AMP X will come with 35mm tyres fitted, and a 1 X drivetrain for versatility on and off-road.

The Roadmachin 01 AMP X will be available in six sizes, from 47 to 61, and in two models: the 01 AMP X ONE and the 01 AMP X TWO. Both will be available from November, with the X ONE priced at £8100 and the X TWO at £7200.
