Jaguar has revealed its new electric I-Type 6 Gen3 contender which will race in the 2023 ABB Formula E World Championship, with the firm claiming it to be the most advanced and efficient Jaguar race car ever.
The electric single-seater racing series features a spec chassis, batteries and bodywork which must be adhered to, but teams are able to fit their own drivetrain technology which can make all the difference across a season.
Formula E has ushered in a host of new technical regulations for the new third-generation Gen3 chassis. Power is up this year to 350kW, but the system output is capped. The cars are equipped with a 350kW motor at the rear and a 250kW motor on the front, which is mainly used to harness energy under braking.
Jaguar says its latest Formula E racer is 74kg lighter and 100kW more powerful than the car that preceded it, with the I-Type 6 able to reach a maximum speed of 200mph.
The British car maker says its next-generation Formula E car will continue to be a ‘real-world test bed for Jaguar TCS Racing and Jaguar Land Rover’, while also helping the firm to develop its technology to compete for World Championship success.
Jaguar added that the technology featured in the I-Type 6 racer would support the brand’s ambitions to reimagine the Jaguar marque as an all-electric, modern luxury brand from 2025.
Some doubt has been cast over the relaunch of Jaguar, however, after CEO Thierry Bolloré stepped down just two years into the role.

Despite this, the firm says it is committed to racing in zero-emission motorsport categories with the brand aiming to become net zero across its supply chain, products and operations by 2039.
Jaguar TCS Racing head into the 2023 season with a new livery, with the I-Type 6 finished in carbon black, satin white and gold accents.
The driver line-up remains the same for the third consecutive season with Mitch Evans and Sam Bird returning for 2023.
Last year Jaguar TCS Racing achieved its biggest points haul to date, with Mitch Evans finishing runner-up in the Driver’s World Championship.
“Launch day is always a proud and exciting moment for Jaguar TCS Racing, and this year more than ever, as we head into the Gen3 era of Formula E,” said James Barclay, Jaguar TCS Racing team principal.
“As we head into our seventh season in Formula E, I have been reflecting on how far we have come as a team. Jaguar TCS Racing has a vital role to fulfil beyond the success of the racetrack, and it remains a privilege to play our part supporting the reimagination of Jaguar as an all-electric brand from 2025.”
At the launch of the new Gen3 racer, Jaguar also announced that Wolfspeed would become its semiconductor partner.
The partnership builds on Wolfspeed’s existing relationship with Jaguar since 2017, with the racing outfit benefiting from advanced Silicon Carbide technology which has been used to accelerate on-track efficiency and performance.
Micro Focus, the team’s official technical partner, will also renew its collaboration with Jaguar for the 2023 season. Jaguar said that the Wolfspeed and Micro Focus partnerships support the technology and knowledge transfer from race-to-road with a particular focus on efficiency.
For the first time, Jaguar will also supply its powertrain technology to fellow British-based team Envision Racing, meaning there will be four Jaguar powered Formula E cars on the grid next season.
The new Formula E World Championship gets under way in Mexico City on 14 January 2023.
