Lightyear 2 set to arrive as £30k solar-powered EV

5 Jan 2023

The Lightyear 2, a more affordable version of the firm’s flagship 0 solar-powered EV, will arrive in 2025 - and a waiting list for the new machine has now opened.

The Dutch EV manufacturer launched its first model, the Lightyear 0, as a sleek aero-honed saloon, claiming it to be the world’s first solar-powered electric car to enter production. As a halo model for the brand, it was priced at around £250,000.

Now the firm is gearing up to launch its second model, the 2, which is set to arrive with a shorter range and smaller battery.

Pitched as a more affordable offering, the Lightyear 2 is set to cost around £30,000 and could rival the likes of the Tesla Model 3.

Championing the Lightyear 2, the company highlighted that its solar solution stands as an alternative approach to the automotive industry’s broader solution of adding more batteries in order to deliver more range.

It says that by using a smaller battery working in unison with the solar panels it delivers a more effective solution, as the car is constantly being charged by the sun.

Last year the Dutch marque agreed a new partnership with The Sharing Group to supply it with 5000 vehicles for its car-sharing platform, MyWheels. The future Lightyear 2 is set to be added to the MyWheels fleet from 2025.

Lightyear’s second model will soon be available to pre-order, with the firm opening a waiting list for prospective buyers hoping to secure an early allocation.
