Dutch tech-focused e-bike firm VanMoof has expanded its range with the new S4 and X4 e-bikes, which feature a redesigned frame and more affordable pricing.
Bridging the gap in the firm’s city e-bike line-up between the S3/X3 and S5/X5 models, the S4 and X4 are priced from a reasonably accessible £2198 – substantially less than the £3298 price of the S5/X5 range.

So what’s new on the VanMoof bikes beyond the price? Instead of a torque sensor, the S4/X4 comes with new adaptive motor support and an RPM sensor. The motor will provide 59Nm of torque compared to 68Nm on the S5/X5.
As with the other bikes in VanMoof’s arsenal, the S4 is the larger sized frame and the X4 the smaller: the S4 has a standover height of 850mm, compared to 710mm for the X4.
The frame shapes remain the same as the S3 and X3, but according to VanMoof, have been “entirely rebuilt to offer the very best of the brand’s most technological innovation in its most simple, accessible, and reliable models to date”.
Both bikes feature automatic two-speed gear shifting, a ‘turbo boost’ function, dynamic motor support and a reworked kick lock to secure the bike’s rear wheel. The brand’s anti-theft tech is also included, so you’ll still get the onboard alarms and location tracking via the app. VanMoof also estimates a range of 38-95 miles (depending on ride mode), which is the same as the S5/X5.
For those who enjoy using their smartphone as a bike dashboard, then the built-in phone mount means you can do just that via the VanMoof app. There is, however, no USB-C for charging on the go.
Perhaps the biggest difference in the S4/X4 bikes is the choice of colours. In the past, VanMoof has shied away from brighter, bolder colours in favour of subtle dark hues. But for the S4 and X4, you can choose between four colours: Sunbeam Yellow, Purple Fog, Evergreen and Foam Green.
In the UK, the Evergreen colour is due to go on sale in early June, with Purple Fog later that month, Sunbeam Yellow in July and Foam Green from August. Riders can join a waitlist to this to be notified when their colour of choice goes on sale.
