Char.gy, one of the leading lamppost and bollard-based electric vehicle charging providers in the UK, will introduce new variable pricing tariff that will make it cheaper to fill up a vehicle’s battery overnight.
Drivers using the firm’s new Night Saver tariff will pay 29p/kWh to top up their vehicles at a 5.3kW Char.gy on-street charger between 0000hrs and 0700hrs, a lower rate than some domestic tariffs. The wholesale cost of electricity is usually cheaper at night due to low demand.

Charging between 0700hrs and 0000hrs will now cost 65p/kWh, an increase from Char.gy’s previous pay-as-you-go flat rate of 42p/kWh. The firm claims that its customers will still pay less overall using the new Night Saver tariff if 65 per cent of their charging takes place overnight.
Q&A: how Char.gy is dealing with energy price rises
The firm claims that the Night Saver tariff is intended to add an option to bridge the gap between the cost of on-street and private off-street charging, which is largely due to the reduced VAT that is charged on domestic electricity.
Char.gy boss Richard Stobart, said, “We recognise the frustrating disparity between charging rates for motorists with driveways and those without.” He added: “This also supports the UK’s drive for greater energy security and more renewable energy, because more EV energy demand will occur when national energy demand is at its lowest.”
