Nissan targets solid state battery production by 2028

8 Apr 2022

Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has unveiled its first prototype production facility for all-solid-state batteries, which the company aims to open for production in 2028.

As part of Nissan's Ambition 2030 strategy, the firm is aiming to launch an electric car by 2028 using all-solid-state-batteries developed and built in house.

The firm plans to establish a pilot production line at its plant in Yokohama by 2024, with materials, design and manufacturing processes for prototype production on the line to be studied at the facility.

Nissan claims that all-solid-state batteries can be reduced to $75 (£58) per kWh by 2028 and to $65 (£50) per kWh thereafter, placing electric cars at the same cost level as petrol-powered vehicles.

The firm says that all-solid-state batteries are "expected to be a game-changing technology for accelerating the popularity of electric vehicles", adding that they have an energy density twice that of conventional lithium-ion batteries.

According to Nissan, all-solid-state batteries take significantly shorter charging time due to superior charge/discharge performance, and are cheaper to produce thanks to the opportunity of using less expensive materials.

"Nissan has been a leader in electrification technology through a wide range of R&D activities, from molecular-level battery material research to the development of safe, high-performance EVs,” said Kunio Nakaguro, executive vice president in charge of research and development for Nissan.

"Going forward, our R&D and manufacturing divisions will continue to work together to utilise this prototype production facility and accelerate the practical application of all-solid-state batteries."
