Renault has teased a new hydrogen-powered concept car that it says will showcase the firm's "sustainable development commitments".
The French firm has released a single teaser image of the machine, and has given no technical details beyond saying it will have a hydrogen engine. That likely means it will feature a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine, rather than the hydrogen-electric fuel cell system used by current road-going hydrogen machines such as the Toyota Mirai.
Renault says that the concept will be unveiled in May, and that it will showcase the firm's sustainable development strategy with a focus on the environment, safety and inclusion. It added the machine will showcase the process of the circular economy, by making use of recycled and recyclable materials.
It also says the machine will showcase new safety systems.
The concept has been developed by a team led by Renault design boss Gilles Vidal. The teaser image shows styling elements similar to those on the Megane E-Tech Electric and the concept version of the revived electric Renault 5. The firm has also confirmed it will bring back the Renault 4 as a new small electric car called the 4ever, and it is possible this new concept could preview the styling of that.
That said, the 4ever was said to be powered by an electric drivetrain, making it possible any possible production version of this machine could be something else entirely.
Renault isn't the only car firm experimenting with hydrogen-combustion engined: Toyota has been testing a hydrogen hot hatch.
