Rimac Group has formally launched its standalone engineering company, Rimac Technology, to develop new electric car technology.
The Croatian firm recently took control of Bugatti after agreeing a deal with the Volkswagen Group. Those two brands have been merged into Bugatti Rimac, which is 55% owned by the Rimac Group and 45% owned by Porsche.
Rimac Technology is now a standalone business separate from that hypercar firm, and is owned entirely by the Rimac Group. And yes, it is a little confusing.
The new Rimac Technology firm will expand Rimac’s engineering, development, production and supply of high-performance battery systems, as well as electronic systems and user interface components.
Rimac says that the new technology business will be “free from any oversight by any other manufacturer” which could enable the firm to work with other brands.
The Croatian manufacturer is known to have worked with a number of brands in recent years including the likes of Porsche, Hyundai, Kia, Automobili Pininfarina, Koenigsegg, Aston Martin, but has stated that other projects have been in the works but are not public knowledge.
In addition to the opportunity to work with new brands, Rimac believes that through the creation of Rimac Technology the firm will be able to ramp up production and will be manufacturing “tens of thousands of high-performance systems per year by 2024”.
“If we go back to the very beginning of the Rimac Automobili business in 2009, the dream for me was to build my own electric hypercar,” said Mate Rimac, CEO of Rimac Group.
“Separating the technology business into its own entity is a natural step as the focus of the two markets, hypercars and components, are completely different.
Rimac added, “This new structure will enable each company of the Rimac Group to flourish to their full potential, while still sharing the synergies between them – for example using our own hypercars as testbeds for new technology before we offer it to other OEMs.”
Today Rimac Technology has around 1000 employees based at the Rimac headquarters in Zagreb, Croatia, but will move to a larger head office in 2023 to accommodate as many as 2500 employees.
The firm is currently working on its new Nevera all-electric hypercar, which produces a whopping 1914bhp and 1740lb ft of torque.
