Toshiba partners with ZappBatt to create new micro-mobility batteries

Battery developer ZappBatt has formed a new partnership with tech giant Toshiba to create new lithium titanium oxide (LTO) batteries for micro-mobility solutions. 

ZappBatt will merge its artificial intelligence (AI) software technology with Toshiba’s LOT cells to create the new battery.

The firm says that the new lithium titanium oxide battery, combined with its AI software, will be a “faster, smarter and more economical battery system” and will also allow for real-time battery management and optimisation.

Toshiba turned to Zappbatt to solve three LTO battery chemistry issues surrounding voltage, chips and energy density. 

Japanese firm Toshiba says its LTO cells are ideal for micro-mobility solutions due to “their high-performing characteristics” in a number of categories.  

The LTO SCiB Cells are designed for fast changing and high power environment, according to Toshiba, with the firm claiming the batteries have a minimal decrease in function after thousands of charges and uses. 

Tobisha is confident that the LTO cells can be charged fully in 20 minutes, have at least a 20 year lifespan and have minimal risk of thermal runaway. 

Additionally, the cells perform in freezing temperatures as low as -30 degrees celsius, compared to 0 degrees celsius for typical lithium-ion batteries. 

With ZappBatt’s LTO system in use, SCiB cells can reduce their operating expenses and e-waste which eliminates the risk of a fire. 

Thermal runaway is also reduced thanks to the battery chemistry being free of certain oxides such as nickel, manganese and aluminium.

ZappBatt has created a new hardware system called BATV or Bi-Directional Adaptive Terminal Voltage. 

This allows the system to control the battery voltage input and output digitally with software, meaning the LTO battery can fit into a number of applications.

ZappBatt and Toshiba are conducting a number of micro-mobility pilot demonstrations in North America and aim to offer its new battery solution commercially in early 2023.

“ZapBatt unlocked the potential of Toshiba’s LTO chemistry for a variety of industries and new markets with disruptive technology, moving away from the ‘miracle battery’ trap and providing a real solution hitting the market today.”
