Volkswagen will invest around £1.65 billion in building a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for its forthcoming new Project Trinity electric flagship mode at its Wolfsburg base in Germany.
The firm is currently developing a new flagship machine that will be one of the firm cars on the Volkswagen Group’s forthcoming SSP electric platform. It will also use advanced new software to offer cutting-edge level four autonomous systems. Codenamed Project Trinity, the machine is due to go into production in 2026.

Project Trinity is described as the new ‘lodestar’ for VW’s future electric fleet, offering reduced charging times and a range of more than 430 mile. Key to the success of Trinity will be its simplicity: there will be very few hardware options, with customers instead able to buy and download new systems and features using software. That will make Trinity faster to produce: VW is aiming for a production time of 10 hours per vehicle.
With the machine using an advanced new platform, Volkswagen will build an entirely new facility at its massive Wolfsburg HQ, rather than refitting an existing production facility as it has done for its ID electric models so far.
The firm claims the new site in Wolfsburg-Warmenau will be built with the latest techniques to be ensure that Trinity is net carbon-neutral to produce. Volkswagen added that the new site will be used as a model to guide the transformation of production at the existing Wolfsburg plant, as well as every other Volkswagen facility. The firm is aiming for machines built using the same platform as Trinity to start being produced in the existing Wolfsburg site from 2030 onwards.
Construction on the new plant is set to begin next year.
