Odin Automotive to build Streetscooter electric van

1 Feb 2022

Electric mobility start-up Odin Automotive has completed its takeover of Streetscooter Engineering, and resumed production of the firm's electric vans.

Streetscooter was founded in 2010, and was owned by the Deutsche Post DHL Group since 2014 until it was sold to Odin three weeks ago. It has been Germany's largest producer of light electric vans, which have primarily been used for mail deliveries. It also has subsidiaries in Switzerland and Japan.

Now owned by Odin, Streetscooter has resumed produciton of its Work electric box van, which is available in two sizes. The Work Box van features a 20kWh battery, while the larger Work L Box has a larger 40kWh unit.

The Work Box has an official 70-mile range, while the Work Box L can travel 116 miles between charges. Both figures were calculated using the older NEDC test, which is less realistic than the current WLTP measurement.

Charging for the smaller Box van takes between four and seven hours, with the bigger Streetscooter van taking around 15 hours to recharge fully.

Streetscooter’s new electric vans will be manufactured at its existing factory in Germany and will be delivered to former owner DHL, which ordered 3500 vans to continue the electrification of its postal delivery fleet.

"We are incredibly proud to announce this step for our new venture and the tireless team behind it," said Odin operations chief John Burton. "We knew that the operational maturity of StreetScooter Engineering provided a huge first-mover advantage to us from the beginning, and today is proof that we meant it when we said we intend to capitalise on that advantage."
