Scooters date back to the early 1800s while the first motorised one arrived in 1915.
Throughout the years, manufacturers have experimented with various designs and colours, and now - motorisation. Today, there are a few cool electric scooters that can be purchased — here’s our pick.
-
BMW CE04
Starting off our list is the futuristic BMW CE 04 with its almost motorbike-like stance. Buyers can choose from two colours: Light White or Imperial Blue Metallic, which comes with a livery.
There’re also options to tint the windscreen orange and add heated handlebars, ABS and adaptive headlights. Power comes from a 42bhp electric motor while an 8.5kWh battery gives a range of around 80 miles. Prices start from £12,850.
-
Horwin EK3
The EK3 takes a retro scooter and gives it a contemporary spin. LED headlights and daytime running lights sit up front, it has five-spoke alloys and nifty matte paintwork.
It features a USB port to charge a smartphone and an anti-theft alarm system, complete with a remote control that allows you to start the scooter, switch it off or immobilise it. The battery is 72v, which gives it a range of 47 miles. Buyers can choose from five colours and prices start from £4099.
-
Arwibon Q13Pro
There’s no seat with this one but there are plenty of cool quirks such as three LED spot lamps with daytime running lights, indicators, brake lights, a horn, and semi-slick tyres.
It also comes with three speeds, a display for speed and battery life and a separate display for voltage. Weighing 56kg, the 7000W motor is good for 50mph while the range sits between 30-40 miles. Prices start from around £1860.
-
Niu NQi GTS
This one is available in three colours: grey, black and white with red striping, the latter giving off 80s Honda Elite vibes. A large circular headlight sits up front while chunky fairing sits at the rear. There’s a large digital screen for the driver, and it comes fitted with an anti-theft system.
In its sportiest mode, it’ll reach up to 50mph but, by using the E-SAVE mode, it’ll be capable of returning up to 56 miles on a single charge. If you do fall short, you can always use the fast-charge function. Prices start from £3700.
-
Piaggio One
Known to be one of the world’s most famous scooter brands, and the brand that gave us the Tuk Tuk, Piaggio has gone for sharp fenders and stylish lighting to appeal to a younger generation.
Those interested can choose from six colours ranging from two-tone to full matte black, and it can be kitted out with accessories such as a full windscreen, Piaggio branded gloves and a 28-litre top box. There are four models to choose from with prices starting from £2600. Piaggio claims the range is around 53 miles.
-
Yamaha Neo’s
Another futuristic scooter to reserve a place on our list is the Neo’s with its LED headlights, blue paintwork accents and sleek design. Yamaha lets buyers choose from three colours, which carries no extra charge: Milky White, Midnight Black and Aqua, and there are various luggage options up to 39 litres.
The dual battery gives a range of around 42 miles and the 100lb ft electric motor will take it to 27mph. Prices start from £2950.
-
Vespa Elettrica
Another world-famous brand is Vespa, known for making retro-looking scooters. The Elettrica has all the design cues of a retro Vespa: lashings of chrome, large side mirrors, a large circular headlight and bulbous fairings. Riders can choose from two variants, a 43mph and a 28mph, which differ in price by £50.
Like Vespas of old, there are various accessories to choose from such as a large windscreen, front and rear racks, bumper trims and leather luggage. Prices start from £6300.
-
Supersoco CPx
The CPx is the spawn of Supersoco, an electric motorbike brand, and it comes in two variants: a 44-mile single battery and an 87-mile dual battery.
It’s the equivalent of a 125cc and can be used by riders holding an A1 CBT license. It comes in three colours: matte black, grey and silver, although we think the matte black with coloured striping looks cool. Prices start from £3049 for the single battery and £4299 for the dual battery.
-
Sunra Miku Super
If you’re not keen on the generic scooter look, Sunra has you covered with its motorbike-inspired Miku Super scooter. It’s marketed as a high-speed electric scooter, reaching speeds of up to 50mph, but will also deliver 65 miles if ridden carefully.
It’s fitted with LED lights, large mirrors, swift six-spoke alloys, and it can be equipped with a Miku livery. Prices start from £3499.
-
Artisan EC2000R
Following in Vespa’s retro style footsteps is the EC2000R with its rounded bodywork, half-moon central section, rounded chrome headlight and leather seat. The minimum age to ride is 16 and 50 miles on a single charge is possible depending on the conditions and riding style.
It’s big enough for two people and has storage underneath the seat and on the side. It comes in classic colours such as baby blue, mint green and grey, and prices start from £2995.
-
Cezeta Type 506
By far, one of the coolest scooters on our list is the Type 506 with its oddball styling. Cezeta stepped outside the realms of normal design with the Type 506, giving it an elongated nose, side footsteps and solid alloy wheels.
Cezeta says it’s good for 93 miles on a single charge and that the electric motor will take it to 74mph. Continuing to stir evocative emotions are the SMITHS dials, showing speed and battery power. Prices start from £11,000.
-
Niu UQI GT Pro
Its fairing is stripped back and exposes the suspension components while two-tone paintwork and matte black wheels top off the cool look of the GT Pro. Niu says it’ll manage 37 miles and that it’s so light that it can be lifted by one hand.
It comes with nifty features such as auto-off indicators, with a double flash warning feature for severe weather conditions, and automatic LED lights. Riders can download the NIU app which records ride stats like time, distance, maximum speed and average speed. Prices start from £2066.
-
Zapp i300
It looks like the kind of thing that would be spotted zooming around a seaside beach town with its vibrant colour options and low-slung and youthful appearance. The i300 arrived this year and can be purchased from £5750 with delivery claiming to take between 12-14 weeks.
Buyers can spec different coloured guards, seats, wheels and rear spring. Additional storage can be added below the seat alongside a union jack decal. Zapp says it’ll manage 37 miles on a single charge.
-
Askoll NGS3
Italian scooter company Askoll has designed the NGS3 which balances retro and contemporary styling. You get all the mod cons of an average electric scooter, such as three different driving modes, full LED lighting, a digital display and an application to monitor trip data, but with retro-inspired looks.
There’re three colours to choose from, it’ll cover 57 miles on a single charge and hit 41mph. Prices start from £4297.
-
Lexmoto Impulse 1500
At just £1699, the Impulse is an entry-level scooter for those who want something a bit different. It still has a modern scooter shape but comes with trendy white paintwork and blue striping; LED lighting wraps around the front and a small digital gauge tells the rider how quickly they are going. Top speed comes in at 28mph and it’ll deliver up to 40 miles on a single charge.
-
Seat MO
We’re used to Seat giving us cars, but its MO scooter lands into the market wheels first with its 87-mile range and 59mph top speed. There’s space for two people and two helmets can be stored beneath the seat. It’s comparable to a 125cc scooter which means riders will need to have either an A1, A2 or B-class license.
There aren’t any additional options, but it does come in three colours: Daring Red, Dark Aluminium and Oxygen White Matte. Prices start from £4996.
-
Kymco iOne
It has sharp mudguards, smooth bodywork and LED headlights that wrap around the front. Just above the front headlight, there's a funky abstract pattern, feet pegs pop out from the side and a boomerang LED light sits at the rear.
Power comes from a 13lb ft motor which will push the 97kg iOne to 28mph and, by keeping it under 19mph, it’ll return 37 miles. Prices start from £3499.
-
Silence S01
While its design is sports-bike-sharp and its colours vibrant, the innovation goes beyond styling as Silence has included an optional battery pack trolley, acting as an anti-theft function and easy charge solution. There’s a slight catch — it’s a subscription-based service.
The scooter has a top speed of 59mph, although buyers can also have a 28mph guise, and Silence claims that it’ll cover 82 miles. Prices start from £6265.
-
Eskuta SX250
This one doesn’t need any license as it balances between an electric bike and an electric scooter and is suited to inner city transport. On electric mode alone, it’ll take you to around 7mph but using the pedals will take that to 15.5mph, whilst the range is claimed to be around 50 miles.
You get the scooter looks and components such as fairings, indicators, full LED lighting with high beam setting, suspension, high mirrors, a starting key and a digital display. It can be equipped with a 52-litre storage box and prices start from £1795.
-
Razor EcoSmart Metro
The last one on our list is the cheapest at £500. It takes the form of a basic standing scooter although it has a small seat at the rear, more rugged off-road tyres, and it looks great in the white and green paintwork with the bamboo decking.
It can be had in various colours and weighs just shy of 100kg. On the open road, it’ll hit 18mph and will return around 12 miles on a single charge. Prices start from around £490.
