Here’s proof that electric bikes aren’t just great for keeping the air in cities clean: they can also help keep streets clean.
Veolia has just rolled out 14 new EAV 2Cubed electric bike street cleaners in partnership with Westminster City Council. The new machines will join a fleet of more than 60 electric street cleaning and rubbish collection vehicles that are now in operation in the central London borough, which is pushing hard to reduce emissions.
The e-bikes, developed by British firm micro-mobility firm EAV, are part of a push by Veolia to cut the amount of diesel vehicles it operates in Westminster, and the firm claims that they will make a significant contribution to the 89 per cent of carbon savings that the electrification of its West End Fleet has made.
Veolia will use the machines for fly-tip collection, to deliver commercial waste bags to businesses and to monitor littering hot spots. They will also allow waste to be collected on any roads that are closed to traffic, and in pedestrianised areas.
Councillor Dimoldenberg, Cabinet Member for City Management and Air Quality, unveiled the new fleet under Marble Arch, and held discussions on how Veolia and Westminster City Council can work together to provide a safer and greener borough.
Veolia Westminster boss Helder Branco said: “The new electric bikes not only lower emissions and contribute toward Westminster City Council’s target of net-zero emissions by 2040, but also allow us to offer a further improved and streamlined service for Westminster residents.”
