Spanish brand Cupra will expand its electric offering in 2024 with its new all-electric Tavascan SUV.
The Tavascan is an SUV-coupe that was first shown in 2019 in concept form and will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s electric MEB platform.
Although full details of the future electric SUV remain under wraps, the concept version features a dual-motor 225kW (302bhp) electric powertrain, with an output similar to the closely related Volkswagen ID 4 GTX. It will likely also be offered in less-powerful single-motor forms.
The Barcelona-based firm says the Tavascan “encapsulates Cupra’s electrified vision” with the car remaining “faithful to the 2019 concept car”. When the machine was first revealed it had yet to be confirmed for production, and Cupra bosses said it was a significant challenge to find a way to do so while preserving the dramatic styling.
Cupra's Tavascan Extreme E racer also hinted at the styling of the future production SUV.
Thanks to the MEB platform, Cupra could offer the the Tavascan with a range of battery sizes and different powertrain outputs. As Cupra has a more performance focus, we expect any models to be offered with more powerful setups.
The Tavascan will follow the brand’s VW ID 3 inspired, Cupra Born hatch, when it goes on sale in 2024. A year later the Cupra UrbanRebel supermini - which features VW Group’s Small MEB platform - will join the model line-up.
Cupra is aiming to sell 500,000 cars a year and is planning to see its electric offering in new global markets.
