Electric off-road vehicle specialist Tembo e-LV will partner with ETC Mauritius to sell and distribute electric conversion kits for second-hand Toyota 4x4’s in Kenya.
As part of the collaboration between the two firms, ETC Mauritius has committed to sell a minimum of 4000 Tembo e-LV conversion kits, with the partnership set to run until 2027.
Tembo e-LV specialises in EV conversions for vehicles used in mining, infrastructure and government services, offering kits for Toyota’s Landscruiser and Hilux models.
Tembo’s electric conversion kit swaps the Toyota’s diesel powertrain for a 72kWh battery and 110kW electric motor, giving the 4x4 a range of around 200 km (124 miles).
ETC Mauritius will be responsible for acquiring the second-hand Toyota’s which will then be converted into “ruggedised e-LVs” using Tembo solutions. Once converted, Tembo will continue to support customers with servicing and maintenance.
The agreement between the two firms maker Vivopower’s - Tembo e-LV’s parent company - largest distribution deal to date for the electric conversion kits.
Tembo’s e-LVs are used in wide-ranging sectors including mining, agriculture and tourings. Vivopower is entering the second-hand market with the new partnership, which the firm says will open up a larger customer base for electric conversions .
“This partnership is a landmark milestone for Tembo e-LV on two fronts: it represents our single largest commitment of future orders for Tembo e-LV conversion kits at all levels within a single country and importantly it heralds our entry into the second-hand vehicle repowering market, which effectively multiplies our total addressable market,” said Kevin Chin, Vivopower CEO.
“We look forward to working closely with the ETC team to deliver our solutions to Kenya, assisting both government and private sector achieve their energy transition goals over the next five years and beyond.”
