Car rental giant Hertz has made a major move to boost its electric fleet operations, investing in EV-only rental service UFO Drive.
Luxemboug-based UFO is the first digital and electric-only car rental service, with all operations controlled using a smartphone app. It is based on an advanced e-mobility platform that is designed to help users with the transition to electric transport for both consumers and fleet providers.
UFO offers rental services in several European countries, and currently has a small UK operation in London. The service promises to end the 'or similar' unknown that is common when renting a car, by allowing users to book specific machines.
Hertz has made the investment to help build up its own rental operations. The American giant emerged from bankruptcy in 2020, and recently said it would be investing in a fleet of Tesla’s to further the rental firm’s commitment to electrification.
“Our partnership with UFO Drive is yet another major step in Hertz becoming an essential component of the modern mobility ecosystem,” said Hertz boss Mark Fields. “For customers, this partnership will help us create the future rental car experience that is all-digital and EV-centric.”
Following tests in 2021, Hertz aims to launch UFO's digital rental and fleet management technology across the US and Europe.
