New Suzuki eVX concept previews rugged electric SUV

11 Jan 2023

Japanese manufacturer Suzuki has given a sneak glimpse at its first electric car with a new concept model called the eVX.

The ruggedly-styled SUV was revealed at the Auto Expo motor show in Delhi, India, and is set to arrive in production form by 2025.

The exterior design of the eVX is in line with Suzuki’s existing combustion-engined models such as the Grand Vitara and S-Cross, and the firm says it is designed to combine its “strong 4x4 DNA with the advanced features of the latest BEVs”.

The eVX is 4300mm long and 1800mm wide, making it similar in size to the S-Cross and putting it firmly into the family SUV segment.

While Suzuki hasn’t given full technical details yet it says that the model uses a 60kWh battery that offers a range of 342 miles – although that is on the Indian MIDC test cycle, rather than the WLTP system used in the UK and Europe.

The concept car features a 60kWh battery, allowing it to drive 550km (342 miles) between recharges, according to the Indian MIDC test cycle.

Suzuki has yet to reveal much more about the eVX, although company president Toshihiro Suzuki said that the firm “will continue providing valuable products to our customers around the world by optimizing them for the way different people live and drive.”

Speaking to reporters at the show, Suzuki also said that the firm was taking learnings from fellow Japanese manufacturer Toyota, which it has a technical partnership with. Last year Toyota launched its first electric SUV, the bZ4X, which was twinned with the Subaru Solterra. It is likely technology derived from those cars will feature on the production version of the eVX.

Suzuki also hinted the eVX would “carry forward the brand’s 4x4 legacy” into the electric era. Notably, the firm signed a deal with Canadian firm Inmotive to develop a two-speed transmission “for a future electric vehicle”. A two-speed system would potentially allow for more focused off-road modes, while also potentially increasing range by optimising efficiency at different points.
