Porsche is developing a new all-electric luxury SUV that will use a bold new electric platform and sit above the Macan and Cayenne in its line-up.
The new model is being developed under the internal codename K1, and will be the seventh nameplate in the firm's line-up when it launches in 2027.
It will be the first Porsche to use an advanced new electric platform being developed by the Stuttgart firm. Called SSP Sport, the architecture is designed to allow for performance cars by enabling new battery and powertrain technology.
Speaking about the model at Porsche's annual media event, company chairman Oliver Blume said: "We also plan to expand our product portfolio upwards – with a new all-electric SUV, with a performance-focused character, above the Cayenne.
"We are thereby underlining and strengthening our luxury positioning. We see a strongly growing profit pool in this segment, in particular in China and the US."
Speaking about the new model, Blume described it as a "new car concept", which would offer "a characteristic Porsche flyline, impressive performance, automated driving functions and a new interior experience."
Our sister title Autocar first reported on the new model last July, sharing some details Blume had given then. The SSP Sport platform will be specially developed by Porsche from the main SSP architecture, which will eventually be used by the majority of VW Group brands, ranging from the likes of Cupra and Volkswagen up to Porsche and Bentley.
The SSP platform has a heavy focus on software technology, and will feature a high level of connectivity. That will include over-the-air updates and potentially offering certain features as downloadable options.
While Volkswagen is in charge of development of the SSP platform, Porsche has taken the engineering lead for the Sport variant. It is understood it will use the ‘backbone’ of the main SSP platform, but will utilise high-performance electric motors and battery components. It will also feature an 800V architecture, enabling 350kW ultra-rapid charging.
Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini are all understood to be planning EVs based on the SSP Sport variant.
Other Porsche models that will eventually use the SSP Sport platform include the second-generation Porsche Taycan and a new electric version of the Panamera. Porsche is also working on electric versionss of the Macan and Cayenne that will use the new Porsche and Audi-developed PPE platform.
Porsche is also developing an electric version of the 718 Boxster and Spider.
