The Porsche Taycan has set a new series-production lap record at the infamous Nürburgring circuit, with the electric sports saloon setting a time of 7 minutes and 33 seconds.
The previous lap record was held by the Tesla Model S plaid which circumnavigated the 12.9 mile German track in 7 minutes and 35 seconds.
Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S was equipped with a new performance kit and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) and - apart from the required roll cage and racing seats - was an entirely standard production vehicle.
The performance kit includes 21 inch RS-Spyder wheels with road-going Pirelli P Zero Corsa sports tyres that are now available for the Taycan.
With the performance kit the Taycan’s Porsche 4D Chassis control gets a software update so that it works “in harmony with the sports tyres”.
The system analyses and synchronises all the chassis systems of the Taycan in real time.
The Porsche Taycan Turbo S has up to 460kW (617bhp) and can go from 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds in launch control mode. With launch control active the Turbo S power output rises to a whopping 560kW (751bhp).
Porsche accelerates e-bike plans with start of new joint venture
Any UK Porsche Taycan Turbo S drivers currently on the edge of their seats ready to order a performance kit will be disappointed to learn that it is only available in Germany for the 2023 model. Boo.
The performance kit which is offered through Porsche Tequipment is set to be available by the end of this year, with the Stuttgart-based car maker planning to retrofit the kit after initial delivery.
Porsche says the sports tyres are designed for driving on track with buyers able to switch back to the standard road tyres at any time.
Lars Kern, Porsche’s development driver who set the new lap record said, “ “In the past, only thoroughbred super sports cars got into the 7:33 range.
“With the new performance kit I was able to push even harder, and the car was even more precise and agile to boot.”
The firm’s vice president for the Taycan model line-up added, “This lap time not only shows how much potential lies in our new performance kit, but also confirms once again the sports car genes of the Taycan.”
