Twisted reveals £225,000 EV version of Land Rover Defender

17 Feb 2022

Land Rover Defender specialist, Twisted Automotive, has reimagined the iconic British off-roader as an electric vehicle, the brand’s first full electric offering.

The Thirsk-based firm’s EV platform has been designed to be completely modular and can be used to electrify all three sizes of the previous generation Defender: 90, 110 and 130.

Twisted’s Defender 90 is fitted with a 61kWh battery, while the bigger 110 variant gets a 81kWh unit, both of which power a 268bhp drivetrain claimed to replicate the performance of the combustion-fuelled car.

The Defender specialist says its 90 variant can achieve 140 miles between charges, and that its bigger 110 model can do an estimated 180 miles, thanks to its bigger battery. Both can be charged at speeds of up to 22kW.

The batteries will sit under the bonnet and between the chassis rails.

Twisted’s new electric Defender retains its off-road capabilities with its four-wheel drive layout and low-range gearbox, and can wade up to a depth of 900mm thanks to IP67 water resistance.

“The fully electric Twisted has been a labour of love for the whole team, with thousands of hours invested into its development,” said Twisted founder, Charles Fawcett.

“With an estimated 70% of all Defender and Series Land Rovers ever made still being on the road, it is one of the most recyclable vehicles on the market and Twisted has now future-proofed this British icon even further.”

The Defender has two driving modes - Eco and Sport - with Fawcett adding that the new EV has a lot of power, but retains the charm of the classic vehicle.

Twisted’s electric Defender is priced at £225,000 and will be sold internationally, with US customers already having their cars built.
