Leading micro mobility firm Dott has pledged to more than double the lifespan of its rental e-scooters, a move which it says will cut carbon emissions by almost half.
The firm, which is one of three firms to run rental e-scooters as part of the ongoing trial scheme in London, is aiming to extend the lifespan of its machines by four years.

Dott will begin its new initiative in Lyon, France. Its machines currently have a planned lifespan of three years, but at that stage the machines will undergo a complete refurbishment so that they can be used for a total of seven years.
Lyon was one of the earliest markets that Dott launched in back in 2020, and the e-scooters there have each travelled an average of more than 3100 miles.
The refurbishment scheme will involve a team of 29 specialists completely dismantling each machine, with each part then either recycled, repaired or reused. The scooters will then be renovated and painted – and upgraded, with the addition of a more accurate GPS system and a phone holder to bring them into line with newer Dott scooters offered in order markets.

The initial aim is to refurbish more than 2000 e-scooters, before the scheme will be expanded to cover all of Dott’s markets. An additional refurbishment facility will be opened in Poland.
The new scheme is a result of Dott recently securing the tender to continue to run Lyon’s e-scooter service. The commitment to refurbishing its fleet was part of its tender, and was designed to meet Lyon’s commitment to sustainability.
Dott co-founder Maxim Romain said: “We have always prioritised the maintenance and care of our vehicles, which prolongs their lifespan and helps us to lower our environmental impact. This new project in Lyon takes our approach to the next level, as we refurbish an entire fleet for the first time.”
