E-scooter rental firm Tier Mobility has unveiled a new advanced parking system that is designed to ensure its machines are only left in designated areas – and it will first be introduced in London.
Parking has become a key concern for deckles rental e-scooters, with complaints about machines being left in unsafe locations or obstructing pavements. As a result, many cities and councils have introduced designated parking bays that the machines must be left in.

E-scooters firms use Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to determine where machines are, with parking zone mapped out using digital coordinates provided by cities. But Tier says analysis in France, Spain and Italy has found those coordinates can be more than 10 metres from the physical parking bay location.
Tier’s new Advanced Vehicle Parking System (AVPS) has been developed using both Google’s Visual Positioning System (VPS) and an in-house solution developed by Fantasmo. The system is intended to more accurately determine where e-scooters are located, and to validate where parking bays are.

The firm’s staff will be able to scan real-world parking zones, and define their exact parameters and geo-location. The system can be easily updated, which means I can more quickly respond to any changes due to urban planning, fleet size or demand.
Kian Tahmasebi, Tier’s product operations chief, said: “By combining Google VPS with our own parking space surveying technology, we are taking the next step in parking compliance by developing the most accurate parking validation solution yet.
“Parking compliance plays a key role in keeping both riders and pedestrians safe – and we will continue our efforts to provide the safest service possible to our customers and cities”.
